The Church House is a short walk from the main square of Volissos up a series of narrow, sometimes steep, cobbled lanes. It is a large, stone built village house on two floors that has been restored using traditional building techniques and local materials such as Chios marble and stone, olive and chestnut beams and the interior spaces have been delightfully furnished with local antiques.
This is very much a family home with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and where guests will quickly feel part of village life.
Accommodation Details
On the upper ground floor, there are two large living rooms, one of which has a seating platform that can also be used as an extra double bed. There is an equipped kitchen with a fridge/freezer and gas cooker. A stable door opens onto a lovely terrace. On the lower ground floor, there is a double bedroom. The very large bathroom has a bath with a shower attachment. The washing machine is in the bathroom. There is also a twin bedroom and a single bedroom, which adjoin one another with no door between them.
Outside Facilities
There is a terrace leading from the kitchen and this is an ideal spot for al fresco dining at the large refectory table which is shaded by a bamboo awning. There are superb views out over the village to the sea. This area has been made safe for children. Stairs at the rear of the property lead up to a large roof terrace from where there are fantastic views to the sea.
Local Area
The Church House is located in the middle of the wonderful village of Volissos, where local life is relaxed and traditional. The main square, which is in the lower part of the village is only a few minutes walk from the property, through narrow, sometimes steep, cobbled lanes. There is a taverna that opens at 4am for the early morning fishermen and closes when the last person leaves. There is an internet café, bank, butcher, traditional wood oven bakery, post office, pharmacy, coffee and cake shop, two grocery stores and a number of restaurants. The new harbour area, which is about two kilometres from Volissos offers a chic alternative where there are a number of very good restaurants and bars spilling onto the harbour front.
This island is excellent for cycling, walking, birdwatching, relaxing, and its numerous wonderful beaches. The extraordinary village of Anavatos built into the side of a mountain is definitely worth a visit, along with other fascinating historic places of interest and the unique medieval mastic villages in the South. Approximately 1½ hours drive away is Chios town, with its busy harbour and lively nightlife. It is not unusual around Volissos to see the local people walking with their donkeys, harvesting their crops and it is common to be flagged down by an elderly person to give them a lift!!
