A really charming traditional large stone village house in the unique and unspoilt village of Volissos on the Greek Island of Chios. Panos House has been recently restored to create a perfect family holiday villa that is full of character and charm. The house sleeps up to seven people. Breathtaking views over the village to the excellent nearby beaches and open sea.
Panos House is a stone house that was completely restored in 1997 using traditional building techniques and building materials. The interiors have been designed and decorated with great flair.
This property is in a wonderful location, being the highest house in the village, and sits just below an 11th Century Genoese castle. Panos House has commanding views out over the top of the Volissos and surrounding countryside to the sea.
Accommodation Details
Panos House has been beautifully renovated and decorated in pretty colours with traditional and antique Greek furniture. The property is extremely comfortable and ideal as a holiday home.
Airconditioning in 2 of the bedrooms- the double and twin. Ceiling fan in living room and fans in all bedrooms. The house is on two levels and sleeps six people in three bedrooms. On entering the property there is a spacious open plan living room with a lovely open fireplace, dining area and a simple, but well equipped, kitchen with access to two large terraces, which have fine views out over the village towards the sea.
Downstairs there is a charming double bedroom with an en suite shower room. This bedroom opens onto a terrace, with wonderful views. This terrace is shared with the twin room, which also has direct access and has been decorated with traditional furniture. Beside the twin room there is a small room that has bunkbeds which can also be separated to make twin beds. There is a separate bathroom with bath. In the hallway downstairs, there is also a built-in seating area that can be used to accommodate another person.
Outside Facilities
Panos House has three terraces, two of which overlook the surrounding countryside with views to the sea. These terraces have bamboo awnings, and tables and chairs that are ideal for al fresco dining. There is also an outside shower and the pretty gardens create an abundance of colour.
Local Area
Panos House is located high on the edge of the wonderful village of Volissos. This is a traditional village were local life is relaxed and easy going. The main square, which is in the lower part of the village is about a ten minute walk from the property, through a series of narrow, sometimes steep, cobbled lanes, or there is a road around the village which leads to the lower part for those who wish to drive.
There is village WIFI which can be accessed from a number of places. There is a butcher, an amazing traditional bakery still using the old brick oven, post office, pharmacy, two grocery stores and a number of excellent restaurants. Volissos is renowned for its excellent food and the tavernas make use of the fantastic local produce, so much is organic and absolutely delicious.
The new harbour area, which is about two kilometres from Volissos offers a chic alternative where there are a number of very good restaurants and bars spilling onto the harbour front. For eating by the beach there are some really good tavernas with lovely views out to sea. This island is excellent for cycling, walking, birdwatching, relaxing, and has numerous wonderful beaches, some of which are often completely deserted even though they are accessible by car.
The extraordinary village of Anavatos built into the side of the mountain is definitely worth a visit, along with other fascinating historic places of interest and the unique medieval mastic villages in the South of the island, known as the Mastichohoria villages. Approximately 1½ hours drive away is Chios town, with its busy harbour and lively nightlife. It is not unusual around Volissos to see the local people walking with their donkeys, harvesting their crops and it is common to be flagged down by an elderly person to give them a lift !
